MENGO — The Chairperson of the Buganda Council of Clan Heads, Augustine Kizito Mutumba Namwama, has called for the return of ancestral clan lands and faster resolution of long-standing claims involving the kingdom, saying the measures would significantly boost development within Buganda’s traditional institutions.
Presenting a report to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II during a meeting of clan heads at Mengo Palace, Namwama highlighted progress, challenges and ongoing programmes being implemented by the clans.
“We have come to report on our programmes, what we have achieved and the challenges we continue to face as clan leaders,” he said.
He stressed the need to implement earlier directives on the return of clan ancestral lands, arguing that such a move would strengthen cultural institutions and improve livelihoods within the clans.
“We request that clan ancestral lands be returned as earlier directed. This will greatly support development efforts within the clans and strengthen our cultural institutions,” Namwama said.
He also urged government to expedite settlement of compensation issues linked to Buganda Kingdom Buganda Kingdom and warned that prolonged court disputes were slowing down development.
“If government compensation issues are settled and cases do not drag on indefinitely in court, development will move forward much faster,” he noted.
The report further outlined ongoing efforts by clan leaders to preserve Buganda’s cultural heritage, maintain clan records, and strengthen traditional leadership structures.
Namwama reaffirmed the commitment of the Abataka to safeguarding customs and traditions while promoting social and economic development within their communities.
The meeting brought together clan heads from across Buganda and served as a platform to review progress, discuss challenges and seek guidance from the Kabaka on matters affecting the kingdom and its clans.
